Spring has sprung, and it鈥檚 early

THE warm weather is bringing trees and shrubs out in bloom, creating an unusually early attraction in local squares, gardens and parks.
The city flower of magnolia, winter jasmine and cherry blossoms have all been awakened by warm sun and fresh breezes.
The early bloomers will be at their most attractive until March 10, a newly-released flower guide written by the city’s meteorologists and botanists says.
Some varieties of cherry blossom trees have already bloomed in Gucun Park, where the monthlong cherry blossom festival starts on March 15.
The white magnolia blossom is considered the sign of the arrival of spring.
This year, the flowering is about one week earlier than last year, according to Shanghai Botanical Garden experts.
Typically, it requires five consecutive days with an average temperature above 10 degrees Celsius to bloom. And Shanghai usually enters spring in mid-March.
The weather has been warmer this year — temperatures in December were 2.9 degrees warmer than average, January was 2.7 degrees higher and the first half of February 1.3 degrees higher.
This will be a good weekend to get out and enjoy the blossoms as temperatures are forecast to be about 12-14 degrees.
But light-moderate air pollution is forecast until Monday morning. An easterly wind will blow in on Monday afternoon to disperse the pollutants.
The mercury will continue to climb — Tuesday and Wednesday will be sunny, with temperatures between 7 and 15 degrees.
