Spring is here and so is the voucher season
MORE of Shanghai's neighbor cities will follow Hangzhou and distribute discount tourist vouchers for the spring hiking season.
Among the attractions will be the 8,799-yuan (US$1,286) value super coupons from Shaoxing, in Zhejiang Province, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
The coupon looks like a poster and contains about 50 smaller vouchers, which can be used at Shaoxing's hotels, scenic spots, cafes and shops. The offers started on March 6 and will go through to the end of August. The first 150,000 super coupons will be mailed to Shanghai residents before March 20. The promotion will target car owners.
Nanjing, capital of Jangsu Province, also plans to give out 80-million-yuan worth of discount vouchers to Shanghai and other cities in the Yangtze River Delta area.
Suzhou, a favorite destiny for Shanghai tourists, will launch a new tourist route through its countryside. To woo more local visitors, the Jiangsu city will give out coupons for the route in April and May. Details will be unveiled later this month.
To match the competition, Shanghai's tourism authority said it plans to cover more scenic sites in its discount programs as well as develop more 100-yuan one-day trips in the city.
Last month, the authority launched a program which offered tickets to some tourist venues for half price on Tuesdays.
Tourist coupons have been a hit with local people. Police had to be called in on March 1 to handle a rush for coupons being handed out by Hangzhou City.
