Spring-flowering cherry ... in October

This year’s unusual weather has seen spring-flowering Yoshino Cherry trees at the Shanghai Botanical Garden burst into blossom now.

Flowers are out in five or six trees in the garden.

The sprays went into a dormant condition in July due to the hot weather, while the drop in temperatures and more rain in September brought them out, said Zhu Jijun, a park official.

But the flowers are small and few, Zhu added.

However, one of two Higan Cherry trees, introduced from Japan by the garden last year, is also in blossom now. Both are expected to be in full blossom in the end of this month. Higan Cherry trees flower twice a year — in spring and late in the year.
