Station security tightened
PASSENGERS at Shanghai South Railway Station will now be subjected to a second security check, city railway police said yesterday.
The measure, which is expected to be in place until the end of the G20 Summit being held in Hangzhou in neighboring Zhejiang Province on September 4 and 5, is intended to prevent “dangerous and banned objects” from being taken into the host city.
Besides regular checks at the entrance to the railway station, tourists will have their belongings checked again before being allowed into the waiting area. Police said the second check will be more strict and new appliances able to detect minute amounts of explosives will be in use.
Similar measures will be imposed at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai Railway Station, two other major railway stations in the city, from August 15.
Lin Ronggui, spokesperson for Shanghai Railway Police, said passengers travelling south should arrive at railway terminals at least one hour ahead of their scheduled departure time.
