Strong winds to clear the city air

SHANGHAI’S air quality should see an improvement today after two days of heavy pollution that triggered a yellow alert and emergency measures that included the cancellation of schools’ outdoor activities, according to city officials.

Shanghai Education Commission ordered schools and kindergartens to cancel outdoor activities after the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau issued a yellow air pollution alert at 7am yesterday.

A yellow alert is triggered when the Air Quality Index is forecast to be between 201 and 300.

The poor air since Monday afternoon has been blamed on pollutants from northern cities and provinces.

The index climbed to 324, or “severely polluted,” at 7am yesterday with PM2.5, the tiny particles particularly hazardous to health, the major pollutant.

The bureau activated emergency measures on Monday, suspending operations at constructions sites within the Outer Ring Road, and banned vehicles carrying construction waste from the roads.

Under the yellow alert, 313 heavy industry enterprises, mainly in the oil, chemical and steel sectors, were required to reduce production and power plants told to make use of green energy.

Operations at some docks and concrete mixing plants were suspended to lessen dust. The bureau said most enterprises and construction sites they inspected over the past two days had complied with instructions and stopped work.

The Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said from last night stronger winds would help clear the pollution. The AQI is forecast to be between 65 and 85 this morning, or “good,” with PM10 the major pollutant. By this afternoon it said the index should be between 55 and 75.

“Shanghai will enjoy much better air quality on Wednesday, and the improved situation is expected to last for a while since no more intensive pollution has been detected over the northern provinces and cities,” a center staff member said yesterday.

As pollution decreases, so will the temperature.

Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said the arrival of a cold front last night will see temperatures drop by as much as 6 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature today is forecast to be between 3 and 6 degrees, falling to zero tomorrow. Friday will be slightly warmer with a high of 9 degrees.
