Structural work complete on cross-river tunnel

LUJIAZUI, in Pudong New Area, will soon be only a couple of minutes' drive from the North Bund area as the main structure of another vehicle tunnel across the Huangpu River was completed yesterday.
The Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co announced yesterday it had finished creating the structure of the twin tubes of the Xinjian Road Tunnel.
Equipment will be installed and the interior will be decorated in the next few months before the tunnel opens for traffic before the World Expo starts next May.
The new cross-river passage is south of the Dalian Road Tunnel and north of the Yan'an Road Tunnel.
It starts from Xinjian Road in Puxi and leads to Yincheng Road E. in Pudong.
The core of Shanghai's financial district, Lujiazui will be connected through the future tunnel directly to the North Bund area, home to the city's rising shipping transaction center and its main cruise ship terminal.
The 2.3-kilometer tunnel is expected to alleviate the current serious traffic congestion in the North Bund area and relieve pressure on the nearby Yan'an Road Tunnel.
The Xinjian Road Tunnel together with the Renmin Road Tunnel, also under-construction, are key parts of a traffic project on and near the Bund, scheduled to finish before the World Expo 2010.
Eight cross-river vehicle tunnels are under construction in the city.
