Suburban attractions delight the crowds

TOURIST attractions in Shanghai's suburban areas proved popular during the May Day holiday with flower shows and taqing (spring outing) activities drawing the crowds. Downtown, however, there was a drop in the number of visitors to some scenic spots, according to the Shanghai Tourism Bureau.
Gucun Park in Baoshan District welcomed 64,500 visitors over the past three days, 125 percent more than in the same period of last year, while Fengjing Water Town in Jinshan District, which offered discount tickets for its scenic spots, attracted 84,500 visitors between April 29 and May 1, up 46 percent.
The Happy Valley amusement park in Songjiang District, Dongping Forest Park on Chongming Island and Oriental Green Boat park also reported an increase in the number of visitors.
However, Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum saw a 34 percent drop in visitors, with just 9,900 over the three days. The observatory in the Jin Mao Tower and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum also witnessed a dip in numbers.
Tongli Old Town in Shanghai's neighboring Jiangsu Province, Oriental Green Boat park, and Nanxun Water Town in Zhejiang Province were the most popular short trips for city residents during the holiday, the Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center said.
The center received 7,145 passengers, a slight decrease compared with last year, partly because of the cancellation of farm tours due to the recent bird flu outbreak.
Overall, 16 major scenic spots monitored by the bureau welcomed 634,400 people during the holiday, up 22 percent.
Meanwhile, the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau said online shopping, telecommunications and prepaid services made up a third of the 212 complaints it received during the holiday.
Among them was a diner whose voucher was rejected because a restaurant said the holiday was a peak period.
