Subway price cut rumors off-track
SHANGHAI'S Metro operator has dismissed online rumors that it is planning to cut ticket prices on short journeys.
An online post, which has been forwarded many times, said the price of a subway ticket is to be set at 2 yuan (30 US cents) for journeys of up to 6 kilometers.
Currently, the lowest ticket price is 3 yuan - except on Line 5 where one costs 2 yuan.
But Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said yesterday there was no basis to the price-cut claims. The operator said these were old rumors resurfacing. "This claim first showed up as early as 2009," said an official.
The online blog also claimed that journeys of between 6 and 12 kilometers would be priced at 3 yuan and prices capped at 10 yuan.
Presently these are between 3 and 4 yuan and 10 yuan respectively.
