Subzero nights and a chance of snow
SHANGHAI should experience some of the coldest weather yet this winter with possible snow as the mercury is expected to plunge well below freezing as the weekend approaches.
The daily low is expected to drop to 2 degrees Celsius today and dip to zero tomorrow. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the temperature will plummet to around 3 degrees below zero in the downtown, and to 4 to 6 degrees below zero in the suburbs, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.
Highs should trend down from today's expected 8 degrees to 5 degrees tomorrow and 3 degrees during the weekend.
The city could be dusted by snow flurries tomorrow morning, followed by sunny to cloudy weather for the next couple days.
"The influence of the cold snap will last for a while," said Fu Yi, a bureau forecaster. "Temperatures will not experience a major rise next week."
Local utility authorities said they are prepared for heavier energy demand.
Shanghai Electric Co noted that many companies don't work on weekends so the big chill on Saturday and Sunday shouldn't cause a major problem.
Shanghai Gas Co said it will ensure supply by increasing purchases from western China. Officials said they may limit gas supply in parts of the city if necessary.
The Shanghai Water Bureau said it has urged local supply companies to keep an eye on the piping system to prevent freezing and cracking.
At the zoos, animals that aren't accustomed to cold will be moved to heated rooms.
