Summer tour program to draw families to city

A DISCOUNTED summer family tour program has been launched in Shanghai to offer free admittance to some of Shanghai's most popular tourism attractions along the Huangpu River, the city's tourism administration said yesterday.

The tourism authority said the program, which started yesterday and lasts until end of next month, will offer free entry to 17 famous travel spots such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower in Lujiazui and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. The ordinary fare to these spots runs from 30 yuan (US$4.72) to 120 yuan per person.

But the tour package purchasers must stay at the program's designated hotels if they want to take advantage of free admittance to some travel spots, according to the tourism watchdog.

More than 100 local hotels ranging from the top tier to some of the more economic chain hotels are included in the program, the watchdog said.

The hotel will offer a tour package allowing free admittance for two or three people to two of the 17 travel spots.

The details and rules of the tour package purchases are available at some major travel websites and also on www.ctrip.com.

The travel watchdog said the government-supported travel program is expected to have great appeal for out-of-town students on summer holiday and their families.

The watchdog said they hoped more people from other parts of China will be attracted to visit Shanghai as a result of the discounted tourism program that is being offered this summer.
