Sunny days, warmer weather ... and then the rain returns

SUNNY weather with some cloud is forecast for the next few days in the city, but rain will return later this week, forecasters said yesterday.
The mercury will climb gradually and reach 27 degrees Celsius by Thursday, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
Today marks lixia — the seventh of 24 traditional Chinese solar terms — denoting the beginning of summer.
The custom on this day is to eat eggs, beans and bamboo to fight the upcoming heat.
But despite tradition, it’s still too early to announce the start of the meteorological summer, said Zhang Ruiyi, a chief service officer at the bureau.
Shanghai’s meteorological summer will be declared once the average 24-hour temperature in the city hits 22 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days after lixia.
Shanghai usually enters summer in meteorological terms in late May or early June, said the bureau.
“Summer is still far away and it is not usually announced in Shanghai until around xiaoman,” Zhang said.
Xiaoman — the eighth solar term, meaning grain begins to ripen — falls on May 21.
The earliest summer on record in Shanghai was in 2009, when it started on May 6, said the bureau.
The latest start was in 1995, when summer finally got under way on June 24.
Today is set to be overcast under the influence of high pressure following a wet day yesterday, and temperatures will range between 13 degrees and 21 degrees.
Good weather will see the mercury edge up every day until Friday.
Tomorrow should be cloudy to sunny, with a high of 23 degrees.
On Wednesday, it will be sunny and the mercury is predicted to range between 16 and 26 degrees.
Thursday will be cloudy, with temperatures ranging between 17 and 27 degrees.
But the good weather will come to an end on Friday and the mercury will drop significantly. Friday is predicted to see moderate rain, with the temperature dropping 7 degrees from Thursday, weatherman said.
