Surgery can cure one sixth of dementia patients

About one sixth of dementia patients can be treated because theirs is a symptom called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) which is caused by an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the ventricles of the brain and the symptom is similar to Alzheimer's disease, Shanghai doctors said.

NPH usually takes place among people aged over 60 and can be treated with a surgery.

"Earlier the treatment, better the result," said Dr Sun Bomin of Shanghai Ruijin Hospital.

"Many patients come to the hospital after suffering dementia for a long time and miss the best opportunity for treatment," Sun said.

Only 20 to 30 percent of patients with NPH go to see the doctors because many patients think their deteriorating memory and reasoning ability is the normal result of aging.
