Survey: Big fall in traffic violators
A REPORT by Shanghai Statistics Bureau says that nearly 90 percent of citizens believe that traffic violations had fallen since a crackdown against traffic offenders was launched in late March.
Shanghai traffic police had earlier said the number of 110 reports over road traffic disputes had fallen 13 percent in June compared to March.
The crackdown was launched on March 24.
According to the statistic bureau, which surveyed over 1,700 people, traffic violations had gone down over the past few months. That included illegal parking, jay walking and other violations by pedestrians and bikers.
The number of private cars providing illegal service to passengers was also down substantially.
The bureau claims 49 percent of the residents living around the Outer Ring Road area saw “obvious improvements in traffic orders,” while the figure for residents in the Inner Ring Road area was 39 percent.
The report also said that 55 percent citizens felt that self-control was the key to create a better traffic order in the city.
Other aspects that can be improved are the construction of road and traffic facilities, as well as a long-term supervision system.
Some 42 percent of people who own a car said that they don’t have a fixed parking space near their residence.
A few of them suggested that companies should provide unused space for nearby residents to park cars in the evening and after office hours.
