Survivor tells of ordeal

A MEMBER of the group that organized the ill-fated weekend adventure trip to eastern China's Zhejiang Province said they got caught in bad weather when they tried to cross Luxi Gorge in Jingning She Autonomous County of Lishui City.

The organizer's Website reopened yesterday after being closed for two days.

The member, identified as Xiao'ai, said on the Highway Club Website that group members - 10 males and eight females - were forced to turn back and cross a river to a nearby village.

Zhang Lin, who was at rear, was washed away. The guide and two fellow members, Liu Nuo and Liu Yujie, used a rope to try to rescue Zhang but were also washed away.

"I was heading the group," Xiao'ai said. "Our leader told me to turn back and head to nearby Guiyuan Village."

They tried to wade through a river with a rope after the guide told them it was the only way to the village. Female members crossed first. Zhang volunteered to go last. When it came to his turn to cross, he slipped and fell.

The guide, Liu Nuo and Liu Yujie threw a rope to Zhang in vain. The three started to get into difficulties and the hikers borrowed a rope from another excursion group from Suzhou.

But the rope was not long enough and the three were also washed away.
