Suzhou Creek bridge project in full swing

CONSTRUCTORS have finished digging pillar shafts for a new bridge over the Suzhou Creek and the downtown bridge is expected to open to traffic in December, Shanghai Construction Commission said today.

The news is relieving for tens of thousands of motorists and cyclists in Putuo, Zhabei and Jing'an districts who have suffered traffic chaos caused by the bridge project.

The reconstruction of Jiangning Road Bridge will eventually ease congestion on major roads in the surrounding area, the project supervisor said.

The original Jiangning Road Bridge was demolished after 40 years of service because heavy traffic had rendered it "structurally dangerous."

The supervisor said the bridge's main pillars will be under construction early next month and the bridge span will be built in August. The bridge will open to traffic in December as planned.

The commission has shown the design of the new bridge online to solicit public suggestions for improvement.
