System to monitor transport

THE city is near to completing an integrated control system to monitor and manage all public transport across town.

Shanghai Communications, Transport and Port Administration said the system would be launched around the beginning of next year in order to raise management efficiency and safety supervision of all public transport vehicles in preparation for the 2010 World Expo.

A demonstration of the system for the media saw a fleet of taxis heading to Hongqiao Airport within two minutes of a simulated crisis in which large crowds of passengers were at the terminal.

Urban transit and long-distance buses, taxis, Metros, ships as well as dangerous cargo carriers would all have GPS systems installed or updated before the Expo and be integrated with the management system, transport officials said.

Officials said the transport watchdog was also taking extensive efforts to improve safety on public transport. Locally operated coaches, for example, would for the first time receive close technical supervision to reduce unsafe operations.

Sun Jianping, the transport bureau director, said a surveillance system for long-distance buses had already been developed by local engineers. All local coaches would be equipped with the system before March.

It would sound a warning when the driver drove too quickly or longer than the permitted hours. It would also keep evidence of drivers picking up passengers along their route in a bid to avoid unchecked carry-ons.

Most of the buses and ships entering the city during the Expo would also be monitored by similar systems. Transport officials said yesterday that they were having talks with counterpart authorities in nearby provinces to iron out the technical details.

The transport bureau also plans to work with police on more anti-terrorism and emergency drills.
