Thailand waives visa fees to boost tourism
THAILAND will exempt visa fees for Chinese mainland and Taiwan visitors from next month to October, the Shanghai Office of the Thailand Tourism Authority said yesterday.
At present, the visa fee is 230 yuan (US$37). The aim of the incentive is to boost the Thai tourist industry, Thai media reported.
Travel agencies in Shanghai said they have not received official documents about the exemption, but said it would certainly be welcomed by the local tourist market.
The office said details are yet to be announced.
The number of Shanghai visitors to Thailand dropped by 40 percent after a coup by the Thai military in May, but it picked up in late June, the Shanghai Datong Travel Agency said.
Now, the number has rebounded to almost the same as before the coup, it said.
Online travel operator Ctrip and Shanghai Spring International Travel Service said now is the peak season for local tourist trips to Thailand and that the number of locals going there has risen significantly recently.
