‘Thank you for rescuing my baby!’

A MOTHER yesterday found the local traffic police officer to thank him who rushed her baby daughter to the hospital and then paid her medical fees last week, Pudong police said.

The policeman, Chen Chunrong, said the mother and two relatives visited him and gave him the 1,000 yuan (US$150) he had paid the hospital.

“They said ‘thank you’ repeatedly, but I think I just did what anyone would do,” Chen told Shanghai Daily. “And I did not expect them to find me and return the money. The most important thing is that the baby is fine now. She is only 17 months old.”

Chen said he decided to follow a suspicious-looking taxi around 3pm on Friday afternoon when he was patrolling in a police car at the intersection of Wulian Road and Heze Road in Pudong.

Then a woman got out of the taxi with a baby in her arms, rushed over to his car and anxiously knocked on the window, said Chen.

The woman told Chen that her baby was choking and needed to get to a hospital immediately, and that the taxi driver had refused to take her.

“The mother repeatedly asked me to save her baby and I saw the baby’s arms were limply hanging down, suggesting her condition was quite serious,” Chen said.

He immediately drove them to Shanghai Gongli Hospital with the roof lights flashing.

“The mother was extremely stressed out,” said Chen.

They arrived at the hospital eight minutes later. Doctors found that the baby’s trachea was blocked by food and said she could have died if they had arrived several minutes later.

But the mother found she had forgotten to bring money to pay the medical fees when she left home. But Chen generously pulled out 1,000 yuan and paid the hospital.

“Since the doctors were looking after her, I saw no reason to stay any longer as I was on duty,” said Chen.

The policeman left without leaving his name or contact information and he did not mention the incident to his colleagues or family members.

But the grateful mother was determined to find him and thank him in person.

She contacted the police and located Chen six days later.

“It’s not a big thing for me,” said Chen. “They really did not need to thank me and return the money.”
