Third Pudong terminal on the cards

A THIRD terminal may be built at Shanghai's Pudong International Airport to handle the increasing number of air travelers, an airport official said yesterday.

But a fourth runway is definitely on the way and should be completed by around 2013, Hu Zhigong, deputy general manager with Shanghai Airport Authority, said.

Pudong airport was already "one of the busiest airports around the world," he said, and passenger turnover is growing. But he did not give a date for any new terminal.

The Shanghai government said earlier in its plan for the next five years that a fourth and a fifth runway in Pudong were being planned.

Pudong airport handled more than 40 million passengers last year, nearly 30 percent more than 2009.

Meanwhile, the first airport terminal outside Shanghai in the Yangtze River Delta region opened yesterday. Air travelers from Jiangsu Province taking flights from Pudong airport can use the terminal in Jiangsu's Kunshan City.
