Tire tracks lead cops to hit-run driver

A truck driver has been arrested in the hit-and-run that killed a 70-year-old woman in Hongkou District this week, police said yesterday.

In events that read like a real-life version of the American TV show "CSI," Hongkou District police identified the truck by the tire threads at the scene, though no one had witnessed the accident.

The suspect surnamed Cai fit all the facts, said police.

The accident happened around 8am on Jiangyang Road S. near Yingao Road W. on Tuesday.

The victim was hit by a vehicle while crossing the street. A taxi driver called police several minutes later.

No witness was found and the cameras on the intersection did not catch the accident either, the police said.

"Almost all the clues were broken and the case went into a deadlock on Tuesday noon," the police said.

But tire threads left at the scene showed the vehicle to be a truck. Police checked video cameras on nearby streets and spotted five possible trucks.

After comparing the tire threads of the trucks, they said, they confirmed that a trash truck hit the woman.

Cai, the driver, was arrested at his apartment at 2am on Wednesday.
