Too many tourists threaten to overwhelm Metro at night

MORE ticket booths and passenger restrictions are to be introduced at Metro Line 2's Nanjing Road E. Station to ease congestion at night.

Line 2 is seeing a new surge of passengers outside the usual rush hours. Most are World Expo visitors or out-of-town tourists enjoying the city at night.

Line 2 is the busiest of the city's 11 lines, with a daily passenger turnover of 1.3 million.

About 144 passengers enter the Nanjing Road E. Station every minute between 8pm and 9:30pm at present. The passenger volume from 6pm to 7pm, the evening rush hour, is 134 per minute.

It's getting so crowded after 8pm that some staff are allowing passengers onto the platform without buying tickets first. They are asked to pay at their destination.

Two ticket booths are to be added to cope with visitors unfamiliar with the 16 automatic machines at the station and station entrances may be closed when "the crowds are overwhelming." Similar measures are to be taken at other busy stations such as Lujiazui and Zhangjiang High-Tech Park.

There are also plans to add more carriages at night.
