Tourism Festival to offer rich array of concerts, fun events

THE city's annual carnival for tourists begins tomorrow, and there are several events among the highlights at this year's Shanghai Tourism Festival, which runs until October 6.

People will be able to enjoy firework shows, rock and pop music, and even partake in botanical research among other activities, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said.

The traditional opening floats parade will take place on Huaihai Road M. tomorrow evening.

Floats and performing squads from more than 20 countries and regions around the world will provide a grand evening spectacle.

Late this month, more than 20 float ships will cruise on the Huangpu River.

Joining the float parade will be the 12th Shanghai International Music Fireworks Festival, to be held on three dates - September 30, October 3 and October 6.

Fireworks shows from Greece, Sweden, Portugal and South Korea will present a visual feast to the audience.

Many events will be held in local suburban districts. Rock 'n' roll and other bands from home and abroad will play at venues in the Luodian area, Baoshan District, from October 3-5.

In Songjiang District, people will be able to learn about ancient Shanghai culture at the Guangfulin Relics, which originated more than 4,000 years ago.

In the Sunqiao area of the Pudong New Area , people will be able to pick fruits and vegetables, as well as taste organic varieties.

In Nanxiang Town in Jiading District, a steamed-bun festival will kick off on September 20, and will last for more than a month.

Apart from the many events and activities, most local tourist sites, restaurants and hotels will offer big discounts from today through October 6 to mark the festival.

Almost all the main sightseeing and other tourist spots in the city will join the campaign, said the administration.

The tourism festival attracts more than 8 million visitors each year.
