Tourism festival will be more magical this year
THE city's annual carnival for tourists begins on Sunday and there are several new events among the highlights at this year's Shanghai Tourism Festival, which runs until October 6.
People will be able to enjoy a magic show, rock'n'roll music, and even take part in botanical research among other activities, the Shanghai Tourism Administration said.
Rock'n'roll bands from home and abroad will play at venues in Luodian, Baoshan District, while Happy Valley, the city's biggest theme park, will invite magicians and acrobatic performers from all over the world to entertain visitors during the festival.
In Songjiang District, people will be able to learn about the ancient trees and plants on Sheshan Hill. The Sheshan National Forest Park is arranging for visitors to find out about plants which have medicinal value.
The administration will also be holding a floats parade on Suzhou Creek for the first time.
"Some of the new events will take place in suburban areas," said Cheng Meihong, deputy director of the administration. This was to relieve pressure on downtown areas.
The traditional opening floats parade will take place on Huaihai Road M. on Sunday evening. The 28 floats will also parade in the Expo site from September 17 to 20.
The city's tourism festival attracts more than 8 million visitors each year.
