Traffic accident kills baby

A ROOKIE driver who was in a rush to get home crashed into a moped, killing an 11-month-old girl in the Pudong New Area, police said yesterday.

The driver, surnamed Jia, ran a red light at between 110 and 115 kilometers per hour on Shenjiang Road on May 2 and smashed into the moped, police said. The baby's mother and father were also on the moped at the time of the accident.

The father, surnamed Lin, was driving the moped and was still in intensive care while his wife had hip surgery and requires skin grafting, Zhoupu Hospital said. Their baby died at the scene.

Lin was in the wrong lane and was making a right hand turn when hit by Jia's car.

Police said both men were responsible and declined to say how they were punished.

Jia was in a poor mental state at the time of the accident, according to police.
