Traffic accidents in Pudong claim 4

FOUR people were killed in two separate traffic accidents in the Pudong New Area yesterday.

Three people in a van were killed in an early morning pile-up on the Pudong section of the Inner Ring Road when their vehicle collided with another van in front at high speed, police said.

It took a while for the rescue crew to extract the trapped victims, a driver and two passengers, from the twisted van. But the trio, having suffered heavy injuries, did not survive and were pronounced dead on the spot, police said.

City traffic police were still investigating the cause of the accident last night, which might be linked to driver fatigue.

The crash happened about 4am in a section of the Inner Ring Road in Pudong less than 50 meters from the exit to Zhangjiang Expressway.

Two vans were driving in the same direction when they rear-ended. The three people in the rear vehicle, including the driver, died on the spot, police said.

Both the vans were heavily damaged with their engines exposed and broken components and glasses scattered around at the scene.

Hours later, a man riding a scooter was killed at the intersection of Pudian Road and Yuanshen Road after he was hit by a car.

The traffic lights were turning from green to red about 9:30am when the accident happened. The straight going grey Saab sedan hit the scooter of the victim surnamed Zhan, who was turning left, said Zhan's colleague surnamed Li, who witnessed the whole incident.

Zhan was bleeding all over after the hit and was soon rushed to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1pm.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation.
