Traffic congestion slows city down
TRAFFIC congestion was serious in downtown Shanghai and at transport hubs yesterday as more people were either leaving or traveling around the city with the Spring Festival approaching.
Shanghai Traffic Police said they expected this to continue today and tomorrow as people will be out doing holiday shopping, going to company dinners, or meeting friends while many non-locals will be leaving the city.
"Roads connecting shopping centers and transport hubs, including the railway stations and long-distance bus stations, will be especially crowded," according to Yu Dalei, an officer with the Shanghai Traffic Police.
But traffic flow is expected to improve on Monday and Tuesday, the last two working days before the holiday, as many non-locals will have already left the city.
Zhou Min, who lives near Shanghai Railway Station, said the usual 30-minute bus ride to work took more than one hour yesterday.
