Traffic limits in effect for Expo zone
A DESIGNATED area around the World Expo site on both banks of the river barred the roadways to unauthorized vehicles yesterday.
Only cars owned by people living inside the area, as well as Expo taxis and special Expo-related vehicles, are allowed in.
The restricted-vehicle area covers 7 square kilometers both in Pudong and Puxi. Normal taxis and unauthorized vehicles are being kept out most hours of the day.
Car owners living inside the area have been issued entry permits, as have Expo-project vehicles and the Expo taxis.
On Guohuo Road, on the rim of the traffic-restricted area in Puxi, a Shanghai Daily reporter yesterday morning saw unusually frequent police patrols. Drivers without permits were being told to leave and traffic officers were telling drivers passing by about the new ban.
Police have not announced the cash penalty for illegally driving in the area but said yesterday they would allow a five-day grace period before tightly enforcing the rule.
Although the ban is expected to boost demand for the recently launched Expo taxis, there was no surge in yesterday's business, major companies said.
