Train glitch causes Line 12 delay

Metro Line 12 was delayed about 45 minutes yesterday morning on its first day of operation due to a train malfunction, the city’s subway operator said.
Meanwhile, newly opened Metro Line 16 was popular with seniors this weekend as they flocked to get a look at the nice views of suburban areas on the partly elevated route while enjoying a free ride.
Passengers waited for about 45 minutes for a Line 12 train at Tiantong Road Station yesterday morning. After a train left the line’s eastern terminal about 8:25am, the next one didn’t arrive until 9:15am. The usual interval between trains is 8 minutes.
Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said the delay was caused by a malfunctioning train that stopped on the tracks. It was removed after 15 minutes.
Line 16 became the city’s first to include Shanghai dialect into its information broadcasts. Such broadcasts are already common on some bus routes.
Shanghai Shentong said it was gauging passenger reaction and would consider using Shanghainese broadcasts on other lines.
Long queues were spotted at Line 16’s Luoshan Road Station yesterday morning as many seniors wanted to take advantage of the free weekend rides. The line travels past Shanghai Wild Animal Park and Huinan Town before reaching Dishui Lake. It has been dubbed “the line with the best views” due to the rural landscapes at some of its elevated stations.
Line 16 trains currently have three carriages and the average interval is 10 minutes.
Both Line 16 and Line 12 are expected to handle more passengers today, the first working day after they opened.
Line 12 is expected to reduce the burden on Line 6, especially during rush hours.
The line has attracted attention for one long corridor featuring constellations on the ceiling at International Cruise Terminal Station.
