Trains expected to carry 3.4 million holidaymakers
AN extra 43 trains have been laid on to help carry the 3.4 million people expected to leave the city by rail over the week-long National Day holiday, Shanghai railway authorities said yesterday.
The surge in passenger numbers is set to start on Sunday, with 390,000 people forecast to travel, before peaking at 450,000 on Wednesday.
Tickets for trains leaving on Tuesday and Wednesday for popular destinations like Zhengzhou, Qingdao, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Xiamen have already sold out, the authority said.
The number of people traveling by train over the holiday is forecast to grow by 14 percent from last year, it said.
On the roads, vehicles with seven seats or fewer will be exempted from toll fees on all highways from midnight on Wednesday to midnight on October 7, local officials said.
The G2, G40, G50 and G60 highways are expected to handle a combined 4.5 million vehicles during the holiday, they said.
The Yan’an and Humin elevated roads are also likely to be busy on the first two days of the break, as will sections of the middle and outer ring roads that connect to the interprovincial highways.
Traffic police warned all drivers to exercise caution and abide by the rules of the road, especially in busy tourism areas such as Songjiang and Minhang districts and the Pudong New Area.
