Travel app for tourists

SHANGHAI tourism authorities yesterday issued a travel guide app, called iTravels, for both Android and Apple cell phone users.
The free application includes maps, information on tourist spots, traffic information and shopping promotion, said the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
Officials said people can choose text, picture or audio for almost all the main local tourist sites, negating the need for a tour guide.
Meanwhile, iTravels also helps find the best driving route or public traffic route for tourists. It gathers shopping and dining information and will inform tourists about the latest activities held in local sightseeing areas.
Apart from the main Shanghai version, there is also a specific iTravels for Chongming Island.
iTravels can be downloaded from Android Market and iTunes Store. English and Chinese versions are available.
The one criticism from tourists yesterday was that iTravels, whose size is 48 megabytes, might be too big for a cell phone application.
The app will consume high GPS usage as WiFi is not prevalent in China.
