Travelers left waiting as flights halted
THOUSANDS of passengers were left stranded at the city’s airports yesterday after 300 flights were delayed and more than 100 were canceled due to the effects of Typhoon Goni.
Air traffic controllers at both Pudong and Hongqiao airports issued “yellow” flight delay alerts about noon, though this was raised to the more serious “orange” level later in the afternoon.
More than 4,000 passengers were inside the terminal building at Hongqiao as of midday, many of whom had been there for several hours, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.
The impact of the typhoon left runways and aprons flooded, which meant many flights were simply unable to take off, it said in a statement.
Those people who were lucky enough to make their flights still had to paddle through deep puddles, while a makeshift bridge of tables was erected to allow cabin crew to get to their shuttle buses.
Such was the intensity of the downpours that the ceiling of the Terminal 2 building at Hongqiao began to leak.
Tang Yicheng, a duty manager at Hongqiao, said flights began getting back to normal about 11am, but that the massive backlog meant that most passengers were still in for a long wait.
As of 4pm, all flights by China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines were running behind time, the carriers told Shanghai Daily.
Juneyao Airlines said it had been forced to cancel all of its scheduled flights to Japan.
