Truck blow: woman, 88, dies
AN 88-year-old city woman was killed by a reversing truck in a residential zone in Pudong New Area yesterday.
Witnesses said the victim, surnamed Zhou, was doing morning exercises when she was bowled over by the truck.
Zhou died instantly, Pudong New Area police said.
Police said the driver, surnamed Zhang, had been taken in as inquiries continued.
The tragedy happened about 6:22am in Lane 775, Yongtai Road, near Huanlin Road W.
The van-style truck, belonging to a logistics company, traveled on after the accident as the driver did not realize he had hit her, witnesses said.
A back wheel went over Zhou, who was covered in blood, they said.
"There was a woman waving her arms trying to get the driver's attention," a witness said. "The truck finally stopped, with the woman screaming and stamping her feet."
Witnesses said there were three people in the truck, but no one came out to direct the reversing procedure.
The family of Zhou was incensed by this.
"Such a big vehicle shouldn't have been parked here in the first place," said Zhou's son, surnamed Chen.
"If one of the three had got out of the truck, this would not have happened."
Zhou was in good health and liked doing morning exercises daily, her family said.
Police said the driver, a 38-year-old migrant worker, rented an apartment in the complex.
Neighbors said Zhang drove the truck to work every morning and parked it in the residential area every night for 50 yuan (US$7.32) per month.
The tragedy reignited complaints about parking in the complex.
Residents said there were several big vehicles in the residential area besides the offending truck and blamed the administration of the complex for parking problems.
"There are always a lot of vehicles in the area, which makes us feel unsafe," a senior resident said.
Residents also said authorities should lower the speed limit in the area.
