Truck kills 2 and injures 3 after veering onto a sidewalk
TWO seniors were killed and three others were injured yesterday morning after a cargo truck lost control and slammed onto a sidewalk in Jiading District.
In a separate accident, two people were killed and more than 20 injured when a bus en route to Shanghai rolled off a viaduct after hitting a trailer truck about 9am on the G50 provincial expressway in Zhejiang Province, according to Zhejiang media.
Witnesses in Jiading said the two seniors, both women, were lodged under the truck. Some witnesses also said the truck had tried to avoid hitting a car before veering onto the sidewalk near the entrance to a residential compound on Jinrun Road. Police are still investigating the accident.
The bus accident occurred about 154 kilometers from Shanghai. The bus, which had a Shanghai vehicle plate, was heading for Shanghai after leaving Anhui Province.
Traffic police said the bus driver, surnamed Cheng, told them he had taken a painkiller for a toothache and had difficulty staying focused before the crash. When he realized the danger, the trailer truck was only 5 meters in front of the bus and he stepped on the brake, but it failed to prevent the accident, police said.
The bus hit the truck and overturned, falling off the viaduct.
Also yesterday, a 10-vehicle pileup on Xupu Bridge caused serious gridlock for hours in the morning.
Ten vehicles rear-ended on the Xupu Bridge exit ramp about 6am, blocking several lanes. No one was seriously injured and police cleared the site by 8:30am. However, traffic was backed up along the Outer Ring Road for several more hours.
The bridge spans the Huangpu River and is part of the Outer Ring Road.
Traffic police yesterday reminded drivers to be more patient in the hot weather to reduce the risk of accidents.
