Truck kills girl, injures family
A woman was badly injured and one of her six-year-old twin daughters was killed in a crash early yesterday morning when their scooter was hit by a concrete mixer truck near a crossroad in the Pudong New Area.
The 36-year-old mother, surnamed Wu, and her older daughter, nicknamed "Da Bao," narrowly escaped death under the wheels of the truck. But the younger sister, "Xiao Bao," died at the scene, police said.
The two wounded were still in critical condition yesterday afternoon after they were sent to the Renji Hospital.
Da Bao had multiple fractures and Wu suffered internal injuries throughout her body, according to Cui Zhe, a hospital official.
Wu was driving the twins to school on a battery-operated scooter when the accident occurred about 8:15am on Changqing Road near Chengshan Road.
According to witnesses, the truck came up from behind, made a right turn and knocked down Wu's scooter. Its wheels rolled over Wu's leg and one of the twin girls.
Bloodstains were everywhere and the orange scooter was lying under the head of the truck. Traffic police rushed to the scene and detained the truck driver.
The father of the twins, surnamed Liu, went to the hospital in the morning.
He said they were from Xinyang City, Henan Province, and the family had lived in Shanghai for more than 10 years.
Nearby residents said it was very dangerous to cross the road as big trucks drove very fast and didn't give way to pedestrians. Police said they were still investigating the cause of the accident.
