Truck-bus crash leaves 3 injured

A CRANE truck collided with a city bus today, its long arm crashing through a window and injuring three passengers in the Pudong area in Shanghai.

The injured, including a girl, were listed as stable at a local hospital.

The accident happened about 2:40pm at the intersection of Yingchun and Fangdian roads, police said.

The crane's arm crashed thrust into the windows close to the back door of the bus, lifting the bus on impact. The bus came to rest leaning to one side, according to pictures and descriptions posted on the Internet by passersby.

A witness said the truck was driving fast, trying to cross the road, when the traffic light was about to turn red. The truck then hit the bus, which was making a left turn.

Song Xiaofang, a witness, told Shanghai Daily that two of the injured, a mother and her daughter, were stuck inside the bus.

"The woman was first carried out with her clothes soaked with blood," said Song.

The mother did not want to leave, pleading with firefighters to save her daughter who was still inside, added Song.

It took about half an hour to extricate the girl, who had a head injury, witnesses said.
The truck driver was uninjured.

It was an hour and a half before the two vehicles could be separated, police said the police.
Rain had slickened the road, but it was not known if that was a factor in the crash, which remained under police investigation. Traffic was backed up as police directed drivers around the crash.
