Tunnel turns to colors
WALLS colored brightly with a combination of blue, green and white will help ease driver fatigue in the tunnel 50 meters under the Yangtze River that will link Shanghai to its nearby islands with fast lanes.
The tunnel builder made the announcement yesterday as the project enters its final stages. The Yangtze River Tunnel-Bridge project is scheduled to be open for traffic about October, months ahead of schedule, according to officials of Chongming Island, which is at the end of the network.
The project will feature traffic lanes on a two-level tunnel between Pudong and Changxing Island, as well as a bridge linking Changxing to Chongming Island.
Project headquarters decided on the color scheme this week, believing they would be the most effective mix to reduce driver fatigue and avoid accidents.
The headquarters said construction for the 2.4-kilometer transitional stretch at midway Changxing Island to connect the tunnel and the bridge was also going on smoothly.
Construction on the main structures of the tunnel and bridge has already completed.
The project has so far cost nearly 12.6 billion yuan (US$1.84 billion) to build.
