Tunnel will cut travel time near Hongqiao

DRIVERS will soon enjoy a shortcut to Hongqiao's airport and railway station.

The local construction commission said yesterday a tunnel opens later this month.

The two-deck tunnel, with a two-lane road on each level, is expected to reduce congestion on the nearby elevated highways and ground-level roads used to access the airport terminals and the railway station, according to Li Jian, an official with the Hongqiao transport hub's management office.

The tunnel's upper level takes traffic west and the lower level carries it east, the project constructor said.

Li said: "Traffic congestion is especially serious between the Outer Ring Road and the Hongqiao hub because of huge airport travel demand."

The tunnel is said to cut by half the distance between elevated highway exits and the hub, and completes a ring road around the hub.
