Two dead after minibus crash

A MINIBUS driver and an elderly woman were killed and five others were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Pudong yesterday morning.

The elderly woman was traveling in the minibus, which had a Zhejiang Province plate. It collided head-on with a Shanghai car at about 10:55am on Heisong Road near the intersection of Mingyue Road, Pudong police said. The white minibus was traveling north along the two-lane road when it hit a dark blue BMW, witnesses said.

The road between Mingyue Road and Biyun Road was cordoned off for about an hour as firefighters rescued the wounded.

The minibus driver, Zhang Fenghai, 52, was trapped in the wrecked minibus, police said. Firefighters got him out but he died on the way to Pudong Gongli Hospital, according to Wang Peng, a hospital official. The elderly female passenger, who was not named, was confirmed dead at the scene, police said.

Among three other couples on the minibus, four suffered severe head injuries and fractures. A 46-year-old man was in critical condition after an operation yesterday evening for head trauma, Wang said. The 28-year-old driver of the car suffered a broken leg, according to Wang.

The cause of the crash remained unclear, but Pudong police said yesterday that the car was to blame for the accident, without revealing further details.
