Typhoon to bring heavy rain and winds

SUPER Typhoon Nepartak will bring heavy to torrential downpours and gale-force winds to the city on the weekend, said forecasters.

According to the National Meteorological Center, Nepartak’s center was about 780 kilometers southeast of Hualien in east Taiwan and will continue heading northwest toward the island and the east coast of the mainland at a speed of 30 kilometers per hour.

It could make landfall in eastern Taiwan tomorrow morning and then hit the coast of Fujian Province after passing over the island. However, it is expected to weaken after reaching Taiwan.

Its second landfall is expected on Saturday morning and after that it will move north. It will blow over Taihu Lake, which may cause heavy flooding, and turn northeastward to the Yellow Sea on Sunday and Monday, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

Today is likely to be last clear day this week, with the mercury ranging from 27 to 32 degrees Celsius. There is a possibility of brief showers in the afternoon.

The skies will darken tomorrow and there will be occasional showers as the mercury dips to a high of 31 degrees and a low of 26. Similar weather is expected on Saturday, but the high will drop to 30 degrees.

Showers are expected on Sunday and Monday as the mercury soars to 34 degrees.
