Typhoon to bring high winds, rain
SHANGHAI is set to be hit by strong gales and heavy showers over the coming days as a result of Typhoon Dujuan, which is forecast to make landfall in southeast China’s Fujian Province tomorrow.
The blustery conditions are likely to start this afternoon, while as much as 100 millimeters of rain an hour is expected to fall in some parts of the city this evening, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.
The wet and windy conditions are set to remain until Wednesday, though the typhoon is predicted to weaken to a tropical depression after hitting Fujian, it said.
According to Taiwan’s meteorological agency, Dujuan was centered about 600 kilometers east-southeast of the Hualien County as of yesterday afternoon and was moving toward the island at 14kph.
The increased rainfall from the typhoon coincides with the river tide season, which raises the risk of flooding, the bureau said.
Farmers in particular should be aware of the potential problems and take measures to harvest or protect their crops, it said.
Today’s temperature is set to range between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius, before the arrival of the rains, which will drag the mercury down by several degrees, forecasters said.
