Typhoons to skip city, 7 trains canceled

SHANGHAI Railway Bureau has canceled seven trains today from Hongqiao Railway Station heading south to avoid typhoons Chan-Hom and Linfa.

The affected trains are on the coastal routes heading to Shenzhen and from Longyan in southeast China’s Fujian Province to Shanghai.

Passengers holding tickets on train numbers D3107, D2283, D2285, D2287, D3125, D2281, D3136 can get full refunds on the railway website 12306.cn or at the ticket-selling windows in the city.

The bureau said it may suspend trains along the coastal line tomorrow and on Saturday to avoid the typhoon.

The Typhoon Linfa is likely to skip Shanghai but is expected to make landfall today in Guangdong or in Fujian Province, weather forecasters said.

Typhoon Chan-Hom will hit the Yangtze River Delta today but will make landfall in Zhejiang Province on Saturday morning, according to the latest meteorological advisory.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said Linfa was centered about 1,080 kilometers south of the city in the wee hours of morning yesterday and moving at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour to the northwest. It is forecast to land in the coastal areas of eastern Guangdong and southern Fujian Province today.

Chan-Hom was a bit further and centered some 1,660 kilometers southeast of the city and moving at a speed of 20km per hour. It was more likely to leave a trail in the city before it makes a landfall in neighboring provinces.

The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs has urged authorities in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Guizhou to assign duty personnel throughout the day, carefully track the two typhoons and publicize early warning information to the public.

Meanwhile, the mercury touched 28 degrees Celsius in Shanghai yesterday. Skies will be drier and mostly overcast with brief showers today.

The rain will increase tomorrow with thunderstorms likely on Saturday and Sunday. The temperatures for the next three days will range from 24 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees.

It will be sunny on Monday with the mercury topping 30 degrees.
