Underground tube built for Metro Line 16
THE construction of Shanghai Metro Line 16 reached a new milestone yesterday when its tunneling work was completed.
The 59-kilometer Line 16 will link Longyang Road Station in downtown Pudong to the seaside Lingang New Town on the southern edge of Pudong.
About 10.3 kilometers of the new line is underground and the rest is on ground and elevated tracks, the builders said.
Metro authority said the tunnel has only one large tube divided by a partition to save cost and shorten construction time. The method is new in subway construction.
Line 16 is expected to go into partial operation next year. It will connect with Line 2 and Line 7 at Longyang Road Station and Line 11 at Luoshan Road Station.
