University offices to help entrepreneurs
AS part of a new program launched by local human resources and educational authorities to encourage entrepreneurship, 12 local universities, including Tongji and Shanghai Jiao Tong, yesterday established special offices to help students start up businesses.
The guidance offices are expected to provide professional services that exceed those offered by the institutions’ existing career service centers, such as policy consultation and tutoring, as well as help seeking investors.
“The cooperation with the authorities will make our service more professional for potential entrepreneurs among our students,” said Xu Xun, director of the student career center at Tongji University.
He added that the new service would help students understand the latest government polices.
Third-party companies, such as commercial incubators, will also be invited to help students attract investment, according to Xu.
“As a university, we are professional educators, but we have to confess that we need more professional assistance in analyzing the market and negotiating with investors.”
The Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau will provide 150,000 yuan (US$ 23,220) for each office.
“College students are vigorous forces in innovation and they just need some guidance to turn their ideas into businesses,” said Zhang Lan, deputy director of the bureau, at the unveiling ceremony of the new office at Tongji University.
