User-friendly toilets for aging population
SHANGHAI’S public toilets are to be fitted with handles on cubicle walls to make them more convenient for the growing number of seniors in the city.
This will be done as a gradual program, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said yesterday, which was World Toilet Day.
As well as improving facilities for the elderly, the bureau is also using modern technology to assist city residents.
An app is available from the bureau’s website to find the locations and opening hours of toilets citywide.
Some toilets in old residential communities in districts such as Xuhui, Changning and Huangpu are open 24 hours.
Shanghai has about 2,700 public toilets, all of which are free, the bureau said.
They are fitted with barrier-free ramps to improve access for disabled people.
The bureau said the city has a target of one public toilet facility every 250 meters downtown and no less than three toilets per square kilometer in other areas by the end of 2015.
Part of the plan relies on requiring the installation of public restrooms when redeveloping old communities.
