Users of public Wi-Fi services ‘must surf safe’

ALMOST 80 percent of the city’s public Wi-Fi networks are safe, though people should nonetheless be careful when using them, according a recent report.

The claim was made by Shanghai-based information security company Rain Raid, which said that it had investigated 26,147 public “hotspots” across Shanghai.

The vast majority were found to be safe, but security risks were identified in over 20 percent, the report said.

It has been well documented that public Wi-Fi networks are susceptible to abuse, and people in Shanghai should bear that in mind, it said.

“Some ‘parasite’ networks have been found to be designed to look like reputable ones,” employee Yao Wei told Shanghai Daily.

If people notice an increase in spam, there is the risk that their personal information could be vulnerable, he said.

Yao said there is a network named “Starbucks1,” which “might be a phishing Wi-Fi.”

He did not, however, give any examples of people losing their personal data or of being hacked.

Like thousands of people living in Shanghai, local woman Lu Yanping told Shanghai Daily that she frequently uses public Wi-Fi networks.

“If I didn’t, I’d quickly run out of data,” the 47-year-old said.

Free Wi-Fi is common in most of the city’s shopping malls, restaurants, hair salons and other public areas.
