Utilities to get 100km of tunnels
THE city is to set up a 100-kilometer system of tunnels by 2020 for use by utilities.
The aim is to make better use of Shanghai’s underground space, according to the 13th five-year plan (2016-2020) on the city’s urban and countryside construction and management.
The authorities will also look at ways to charge for using the utility tunnels.
Public transportation and infrastructure will be part of the planned underground space development, where underground logistics — such as water storage and energy delivery — will be given priority. This will free up road space for trucks and delivery vans.
Moreover, Shanghai will have more than 200 square kilometers of “sponge city” areas constructed by 2020.
The idea of “sponge cities” is to resolve urban flooding issues while also boosting water ecology by absorbing excess water.
