Video of Metro ticket evaders draws outcry

Within a span of five to six seconds, more than a dozen Metro riders jumped over two turnstile machines and broke into a Metro station. A video clip showing their blatant act created a big stir on the Internet and the Metro operator said today that most of the fare dodgers had been caught.

It happened around 8am yesterday at Metro Line 6's Jufeng Road station, Lan Tian, an official with Shanghai Metro Operation Co Ltd, told Shanghai Daily today.

"It's not a string of ticket dodgers… That's a crowd!" said a blogger who sent the video link to others.

Metro officials said the first man who jumped over the turnstile without being stopped emboldened a group of followers.

The online video also put the blame on the station's security staff as it showed a security worker just stood aside and looked on without taking any action. But the Metro management said back up security workers arrived quickly and caught most of the dodgers and made them pay the fares.

The Metro management also encourages passengers to report to security and station crew any time they witness a fare dodger.
