Warm for now ... but cold on way

SHANGHAI should continue basking in warmth for the next two days but temperatures are set to plunge tomorrow night as a cold front arrives, forecasters said yesterday.

Temperatures hit 25.1 degrees Celsius yesterday - the highest this year, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Under the influence of a subtropical high, fine weather - sunny with some cloud - should continue today, with a high of 23 degrees. Cloud should increase tonight and showers are expected tomorrow, with a high of 21 degrees.

But readings should plunge by around six degrees from tomorrow night, due to the arrival of a strong cold front.

Spring in Shanghai should be officially announced today.

Meteorological spring is announced when the average temperature reaches 10 degrees for five consecutive days after li chun, the start of spring in the traditional Chinese calendar.

Shanghai's average temperature has been above 10 degrees since last Saturday, which would be the first day of spring.
