Warmer temperatures and rain expected
THE cold weather will begin to subside today with Shanghai warming up to 5 degrees Celsius but still seeing a low of below zero, forecasters said.
Starting tomorrow, warmer weather from the southwest will move into the city, bringing rain.
Shanghai woke up to a low of -6 degrees yesterday morning, and the city’s weather bureau maintained its orange frost alert because suburban areas, including Fengxian, Songjiang, Qingpu and Jinshan districts and Chongming County, were still seeing temperatures of below -5 degrees.
Many areas experienced heavy frost and saw temperatures drop to -8 degrees.
Today will be both sunny and cloudy with a high of 6 degrees and a low of -4 degrees. Both the low and high will be above zero — between 1 and 8 degrees — starting tomorrow.
On Thursday and Friday, it will be much warmer with a high of 10 degrees and a low of 7 degrees. On Saturday it will cool a bit with the high dipping to 7 degrees and the low to 5.
Many Shanghai residents were still complaining yesterday about their water supply being cut off as a result of frozen or broken pipes and tanks. The local water supply authority said it received a daily record high of more than 14,000 complaints on Sunday, most of them about malfunctioning pipes.
In a residential complex in Songjiang District, water from a broken tank and several burst pipes was blamed for a thin film of ice on building surfaces and cars. The water supply for households in 17 buildings in the complex was affected in the incident.
“We set three water supply stations in the underground garage for residents to get some water,” a property management officer told Shanghai Daily. “It’s hard to remove the ice because if we use hot water to melt the ice, the water will freeze immediately in such chilly weather. The hot water may make the burst pipe’s condition even worse. So we are not able to repair them.
“So what we can do is to wait until the temperature increases, and then we can start all the repair works.”
Nearly 900 households that saw their water cut off in a residential community in Baoshan District couldn’t cook meals, wash clothes or bathe.
“The water cut-off started yesterday continues today,” said a middle-aged resident. “I even couldn’t wash my face.”
