Water cut to 100 homes due to soaring usage

Some 100 families in the Pudong New Area lost their tap water supply on Sunday night after water usage increased dramatically due to the hot weather, the city's water authority said yesterday.

The increase in usage dropped the pressure too low for water tanks to operate in several neighborhoods in Pudong, an official with the Pudong Veolia Water Corp said.

Water supplies suddenly stopped at the Dongnan and Weifang No. 1 and No. 2 communities on Sunday night when some 100 families were washing dishes or bathing, residents said yesterday.

"It is unbearable since we have no water to bathe, cook, wash clothes and even flush the toilet during such a hot day," a resident surnamed Tian with the Dongnan community said. She said some of her neighbors were bathing and had no water to wash the soap off their bodies.

Residents went out with basins and barrels to collect water from neighboring communities, she added.

The water supply resumed yesterday morning.

"The water company cannot increase the pressure for fear the old water pipes might burst," an official with the water plant said.

The water company suggested that residents economize as much as they can on water and avoid peak hours to bathe and wash clothes.
